Job Summary

We’re looking for an enthusiastic Apprentice / Junior Operations Clerk to support our day-to-day import, export and cross-trade operations on a multi-modal basis. This is an excellent entry-level opportunity for someone who is keen to learn, enjoys providing great customer service, and wants to build a career in freight forwarding and customs operations. With full training and support from the wider operations team, the role will involve assisting with bookings, documentation, customs entries and system updates, while developing strong relationships with clients and colleagues in a fast-paced logistics environment.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Receive and action bookings, with support from the operations team
  • Assist with arranging collections and deliveries
  • Prepare export, import and cross-trade documentation, and support the submission of customs entries under supervision
  • Assist with the preparation of quotations
  • Liaise with clients regarding documentation and shipment information, escalating queries where required
  • Respond to client enquiries in a timely and professional manner
  • Support the invoicing of jobs in line with agreed processes
  • Accurately input and maintain job information within CargoWise
  • Work closely with colleagues, the line manager and Branch Manager to support daily operations

Person Specification:

  • A strong willingness to learn and develop skills in:
    • HMRC entry software (e.g. CCSUK / CDS)
    • HMRC tariffs and customs procedures
    • CargoWise or similar transport management systems
    • Customs clearance and freight forwarding operations (import, export and cross-trade)
  • A polite and professional telephone manner
  • A genuine commitment to delivering good customer service
  • Able to communicate clearly and professionally with clients, suppliers, agents and colleagues
  • Confident using computers, with basic knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
  • Reliable and committed, with the ability to work to deadlines and manage pressure with support
  • Flexible and adaptable within a changing operational environment
  • Willing to support team members and contribute positively to an evolving workplace
  • Proactive in approach, with a willingness to ask questions and seek guidance
  • Able to organise workload and workspace effectively
  • Diligent, accurate and attentive to detail

  • Customer feedback – positive feedback from clients regarding responsiveness, accuracy, and helpfulness
  • Accuracy of documentation – percentage of error-free customs entries, invoices, and shipment records
  • Timeliness of tasks – meeting deadlines for bookings, collections, deliveries, and documentation
  • Completion of internal audits and checks – adherence to internal processes and standards
  • Progress and development – regular appraisal outcomes and demonstration of learning in systems and customs procedures
